City of Newark, NJ - Engineering and Design Services for the Selection and Installation of Emergency Generators at Four (4) Locations.  The City of Newark has contracted with BGA to select and install emergency generators at four critical City facilities in order to provide reliable power to keep the entire facility operating during a power outage.  The facilities involved are Traffic and Signals, City Hall, the Division of Sanitation and Health and Community Services.  BGA is preparing all necessary drawings and specifications, including electrical wiring diagrams and schematics, site plans and facility drawings required to complete the project.  We are also assisting the City in reviewing Contractor's bids and performing construction oversight services.

Pinner Associates - Bay Terrace Shopping Center, 2,100 Square Foot Building Addition.   BGA is performing structural engineering services for the design of two new building additions at the Bay Terrace Shopping Center in Bayside, New York.  The proposed buildings are to be one-story elevated structures, to be built on either side of the entrance to the movie theater on the southwest side of the Bay Terrace Shopping Center site.  The west structure will be approximately 50' wide x 135' long.  The east structure will extend along the existing building to provide a total of 21,000 square feet of new retail space.  The structures will be constructed to span across the service road which currently runs at the lower level along the building. Access to the stores will be from the upper level parking area and from the pedestrian bridge leading to the movie theater.  The building will have a structural steel frame.  The main floor will be constructed of concrete on metal deck.  The roof construction will be metal deck.  The structure will support a fire rated wall adjacent to the existing building.  The main structure will clear span across the drive area below.  A concrete walkway will be constructed between the parking area and the new building.  Additional walkways will span from the existing pedestrian bridge.  Retaining structures for the existing embankment will be designed as needed.  It is expected the foundations at the existing building will be spread footings.  Pile or caisson supported foundations will be used at the embankment.

Dynegy Northeast Generation - Danskammer Generating Station Waste Management Facility.  BGA provided services for the preparation of a cost estimate for the construction of an extension to the solid waste facility at the Dynegy Danskammer Generating Station in Newburgh, New York.  BGA prepared a construction cost estimate for the construction of the new, Phase 3, solid waste facility to be constructed adjacent to the existing facility at the Danskammer Point Generating Station.   The estimate was completed by calculating a quantity of work, including material requirements, from the construction drawings and specifications.  Material suppliers for major items were contacted to obtain current budgetary cost data.  Labor productivity was based on published data from standard estimating publications such as Means.  Material takeoffs were calculated from information on the project drawings and requirements in the project specification.  The extensive earthwork for the project made it necessary to calculate the cut and fill quantities, the quantity of rock removal, the amount of soil to be removed from the site and any borrow requirements.  Due to the irregular shape of the site, multiple sections needed to be drawn showing the existing grade, rock elevation and final grade.  A summary report with backup data was prepared and submitted.

Orange and Rockland Utilities - Installation of the Eckerson Lane Remote Terminal Unit (RTU).  BGA engineered and designed the installation of a Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) at Eckerson Lane for valve control and status in proximity to the Eckerson Regulator Station.  The scope of work was both mechanical and electrical.  Mechanically, BGA changed a manual valve to a motor operated valve.  The new ROTORK valve actuator was installed connected to a new ROTORK control cabinet.  Two new pressure transmitters were installed at existing taps to a new Obrien Stand.  A new Rosemount differential pressure transmitter was then installed on the same Obrien Stand to measure dP on the existing plug valve.  Tubing was brought from the taps to the new transmitters.  The electrical scope included providing an AC power source and telephone communication line for the equipment described above.  PVC conduit was routed from the telephone and power handhole to the RTU and meter, respectively.  Power cables were separated from all analog and discrete signals, and, since no grounding grid existed, one was developed using ground rods.

Township of Rochelle Park, NJ - DPW Garage Structural Engineering Investigation.  BGA performed a condition assessment of the existing structure of the Rochelle Park DPW Garage.  The structure is a one story building with an approximately 20' x 60' footprint.  The scope of services included visually inspecting the building and performing an assessment of the current integrity of the existing structure.  Based on the assessment, recommendations were provided as to the necessary repairs for the structure, including an estimate of the costs of the repairs.  The results of the inspection and assessment were provided in a written report.  Copies of photographs and cost estimates were provided with the report.

500 Kappock Street, Riverdale, NY - Retaining Wall Inspection.  BGA has been asked to provide structural engineering services for the repair of the retaining walls at 500 Kappock Street in Riverdale, New York.  BGA is providing details for both installing bracing for the existing construction and a complete replacement of the wall.  Additionally, a second wall approximately 60' long and 30' high is in need of repair.  BGA is preparing construction documents for the replacement or repair of the retaining walls.  In order to complete this work BGA engineers will:

  • Inspect the walls to determine the existing geometry.
  • Prepare construction plans and details for the construction of the walls.
  • Review contractor proposals for conformance with the construction documents.
  • Inspect the repairs during construction as required by the New York City Building Code.
  • PE stamp any required documents for the New York City Department of Buildings.
